Chapter 3: CRF Assessments & Exercise Programming for Apparently Healthy Participants Flashcards
Define cardiorespiratory fitness.
The ability of the circulatory and respiratory systems to supply oxygen to the muscles to perform (dynamic) PA
What part of the heart is responsible for pumping deoxygenated blood to the lungs for oxygen loading and carbon dioxide unloading?
The right ventricle.
(The left vent. pushes/pumps oxygenated blood into the body)
What is the role of the right and left atrium?
The right atrium receives oxygen-low blood from the body and delivers it to the right vent. and therefore lungs) for oxygen loading and CO2 unloading in the lungs.
The left atrium receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and delivers it to the left vent. for delivery to the rest of the body.
The CV system is composed of two circulatory paths, pulmonary circulation, and systematic circulation. Explain the difference between the two.
Pulmonary circulation is responsible for moving blood between the heart and lungs to oxygenate the blood.
Systematic circulation is responsible for moving blood from the heart to the rest of the body (in order to deliver oxygen to tissues that need it for aerobic production).
In what order does blood move through the major components of the heart and circulatory system?
Right atrium-right ventricle-pulmonary artery-lungs-pulmonary vein-left atrium-left ventricle-aorta-organs-tissues-vena cava - and then back to the right atrium to begin again.
Define VO2max, and explain why having a higher VO2max is good.
VO2max is the amount of oxygen your body can utilize during exercise.
The better your VO2max, the better your oxidative ATP production, and therefore greater work capacity, especially at higher intensities.
What is the Fick equation, and what is it used for?
It is used to determine VO2max. VO2max = HRmax x SVmax x a-VO2 difference max.
NOTE: SV = stroke volume & a-VO2 difference = arteriovenous oxygen difference.
Define a-VO2 difference.
Arteriovenous oxygen difference
It’s a measurement of the amount of O taken up by working muscles from the arterial blood. Hence the diff. in the O content in the arteries vs the veins.
(This is imporatnt bc during exercise, venous O content decreases as a result of increased O consumption by working muscles).
Explain the difference between arteries & veins.
Arteries (red) carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to the body.
Veins (blue) carry oxygen-low blood from the body back to the heart for reoxygenation.
Define systolic blood pressure (SBP).
Define diastolic blood pressure (DBP).
SBP is the pressure against the wall of the arteries during ventricular contraction aka systole.
DBP is the pressure against the arteries when the heart is relaxed aka diastole.
