What are the disadvantages of confederation?
British navy would no longer defend canada
Smaller maritime companies unable to compete with larger companies from west and east
Maritime provinces contribute money for things they wouldn’t use ex. Railway
Rep by pop, maritime provinces no say
US had more opportunities, just join them
Loyalists had strong ties to British empire
Rich provinces had to sacrifice for poorer provinces

Already had defense from Britain and Atlantic
Railroads = no benefit
Had their own trade routes and ports

What are the 6 reasons for confederation?
1) American threat: civil war was over, Americans were mad at British, looking for land. Why not invade Canada?
2) Fenian raids: raiding Canada, Canada had no defending army, no railway to move troops
3) railway: essential to move troops, import goods around country, transport people
4) political deadlock: act of union made equal votes impossible, needed double majority, needed rep by pop
5) financial: needed to trade with other colonies and money
6) British support: expensive to defend Canada with separate colonies, British were losing money
