Why did Lower Canada rebel?
- Ruling class was English, majority of pop were French
- found British rules without democracy and intolerable
- discrimination against French
- English had majority of money even though it was only 1/4 of pop.
Why did Upper Canada rebel?
- Mackenzie wanted American-style democracy and closer ties with the USA but most wanted better gov
- overpriced land > had crown and clergy reserves and blocked building of roads
Who were the chateau clique?
Wealthy English-speaking merchants who controlled most of lower Canada.
Supported by the church hierarchy and wealthy French landowners
