Chapter 3 - Chemical Compounds Flashcards
Molecular compounds
Composed of 2 or more nonmetals
Ionic compounds
Composed of cation (metal) and anion (nonmetal)
Monatomic ions
Ions differ from atoms in that they have a charge; the number of electrons does not equal the number of protons
List of Monatomic ions
Li+, Be2+, Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, Rb+, Sr2+, Cs+, Ba2+, Fr+, Ra2+, Ni2+, Ag+, Zn2+, Cd2+, N3-, P3-, O2-, F-, S2-, Cl-, Se2-, Br-, Te2-, I-
Some metals can form ions of multiple charges
To name these metals, include the charge in parenthesis as Roman numerals (ie. Cu2+ is copper(II) ion)
Polyatomic ions
Consists of a group of atoms, usually nonmentals, with an overall net charge. Most are oxoanions. Only common polyatomic cation is the ammonium ion, NH4+
Acids
A substance that loses an H+ when reacting with water
Bases
Substances that loses an OH- when reacting with water
Binary acids
Made from hydrogen + one nonmetal. Use hydro- prefix, add -ic acid
HF (aq)
hydrofluoric acid
HCl (aq)
hydrochloric acid
HI (aq)
hydroiodic acid
H2S (aq)
hydrosulfuric acid
Oxyacids
made from hydrogen + polyatomic anion. -ate ion becomes -ic acid, -ite becomes -ous acid, -ide ion is named as a binary acid
