Chapter 3- Cells Flashcards
Microscope
An instrument for viewing small objects
Cells
The building blocks of living things
Nucleus
The central part of the cell made up of atoms and neutrons
Chromosomes
tiny, thread like structure inside the nucleus of a cell. They contain DNA which carries genetic information.
DNA
The chemical substance found in all living things which tells you their genetic information.
Mitosis
The type of cell division where two daughter cells have the same amount of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.
Clones
Identical copy of something
Cytokinesis
cell division where the liquid and material of a parental cell is split to create two daughter cells
Infectious diseases
Disease which can be transferred from one organism to another
Non-infectious diseases
Diseases which cannot be transferred from one organism to another.
Antibiotics
Substances taken from micro organisms used to kill bacteria in the body.
Disinfectants
Substances used to kill bacteria on non living objects
Antiseptics
Mild disinfectant used on the body to kill microbes
Bacteriacidal
An antiseptic that can only kill bacteria
Bacteriostatic
an antiseptic that only stops bacteria from growing or dividing
Light microscopes
A microscope which can magnify things up to 1500 times
Electron microscope
A microscope which can magnify things up to a million times
Monocular
Describes a microscope which is used to see things only with one eye.
Binocular
A microscope with two eye pieces.
Stereo
Describes a microscope where the specimen is viewed with both eyes
Magnification
The amount of times the image of object has been enlarged using a lens
Unicellular
Describes and organism with only one cell
Multicellular
Describes an organism with more than one cell
Micrometer
A length of one millionth of a meter
