Chapter 3 Cabling Topologies Flashcards
Name the Three fundamental cabling Typologies
- Star, Hierarchical Star
- Ring
- Bus
- Mesh
Star Topology
Allows all buildings to be cabled directly from the Main Cross Connect.
Advantages of Star Topology
- Provides centralized facilities administration
- Testing and configuration from one location (MC)
- Easy maintenance and security
- Flexibility
- Easy addition to the campus backbone
Disadvantages of Star Topology
- Single point of failure
- Increased Cost
Ring Topology
Allows all buildings to be connected in a ring
Advantages of Ring Topology
- High Bandwidth
- Fault Tolerant
- Greater Reliability
- Flexible designs
BUS Topology
Buildings connected one to another in series (Linear), can be part of many configurations
Advantages of BUS Topology
- Great for limited resources, must be pathway secure
Disadvantages of BUS topology
- Easily breaks all communication between buildings if cut
- No Redundancy
MESH topology
Multiple links between multiple nodes
Advantages of MESH topology
All nodes communicate instantly to all nodes
Disadvantage of MESH Topology
Very Costly
HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coaxial Cabling System)
A telecommunications system that uses both fiber and coaxial cables for Voice, Data, and Video
PON (Passive Optical Network)
Using direct fiber optic cable directly to the end customer
Advantages to PON
- Fewer Active network devices
- Reduced equipment space
- reduces cost of backbone cabling
- Extended distances
