Chapter 3 Biosphere Flashcards
Biosphere
Contains the combined portions of the planet in which all of life exists.
Ecology
The scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment, or surroundings.
The order of the levels of organization
Species, populations, communities, ecosystem, biome, biosphere.
Species
A group of organisms so similar to another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Populations
Group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.
Communities
Assemblages of different populations that live in a defined area
Ecosystem
Collection of all organism that live in a particular place, together with their non living, or physical envirinment
Biome
A group of ecosystem that have the same climate and similar dominant communities.
Autotrphs
Uses energy from environment to fuel itself
Producers
Organisms that can make their own food
Heterotrophs
Organisms that rely on other organisms for energy
Consumers
Heterotrophs (Organisms that rely on other organism for energy)
Herbivores
Organisms that obtain energy only from plants
carnivore
Organisms that eat animals
Omnivore
Organisms that eat animals and plants
Detritivores
Organisms that feed on plant remains and other dead animals.
Decomposers
(Detritivores) Breaks down organic matter
Food web
A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
Food Web
Links all the food chain in an ecosystem together
Trophic level
Each step in a food chain or web
Ecological Pyramid
A diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy or matter contained with each trophic level in a food chain or food web.
the 3 different ecological pyramid
Energy, Biomass, Pyramid of numbers
Energy Pyramid
Show the relative amount of energy available at each trophic level. orgamisms use about 10percent of this energy for life process and the rest is lost in heat and waste
Biomass Pyramid
Represents the amount of living organic matter at each trophic level
