Chapter 3 - Bioaccumulation Flashcards
What is adaptive radiation?
Change from a common ancestor into a number of different species.
What is natural selection?
Making change possible in living things
What is ecological succession?
Changes that take place over time.
What is primary succession?
No soil exists, only bare rock. Wind and rain carry spores of organisms such as lichens to the rocks, creating life.
I am an the first organism to survive and reproduce in an area. What am I?
Pioneer species
I am a stable and unchanging community. Who am I?
Climax community
What is secondary succession?
The reintroduction of life after a disturbance that already has soil and was once a home of living organisms
What are events that effect ecosystems?
Floods, droughts, insect infestations
What is a native specie?
Plants and animals that inhabit the area naturally
What are invasive species?
Organisms that take over the habitat of native species
