Chapter 3 Flashcards
Atkins diet
a diet high in protein and saturated fat that avoids all carbohydrates
Body Mass Index (BMI)
a measurement using one’s weight (in kg) divided by the square of one’s height (in meters) to identify healthy and unhealthy weight ranges
creeping obesity
a gradual increase of weight year after year, which eventually makes a person excessively overweight
electrical impedance devices
devices that send small currents through the body to estimate body fat and measure the amount of water in the body.
hydrostatic weighing
involves immersing a client in a tub of water and weighing the person. the more dense and muscualr a person is, the more he or she is inclined to sink and be heavier on scales
metabolism
series of chemical reactions that breakdown food particles to produce energy
Ornish diet
a diet that relies largely on carbohydrate and includes only minimal amounts of animal protein
Set point
an internal regulatory system aimed toward maintaining a stable physiological condition regardless of changing external stimuli or circumstances
Skinfold measurements
fat measured beneath the skin with calipers at several key spots. there are more than 100 equations and ways of doing this, showing that this type of measurement has potential but is also problematic
