amenorrhea
the absence of menstruation
anorexia athletica
exercising compulsively in an effort to control weight and in a misguided attempt to gain a sense of power, control, and self-respect
anorexia nervosa
an eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of becoming obese, a distorted body image, and extreme weight loss. self starvation
binge eating disorder
an eating disorder characterized by lack of control over eating; eating faster than normal; eating until feeling uncomfortably full; and feeling disgusted or guilty
bingeing
eating in a discrete period of time, an amount of foof larger than what most people would eat in a similar period of time under similar circumstances
body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)
Reverse anorexia, when individuals, typically men, become obsessed with the perception that they are not muscular enough
body image
composed of the following: a perceptual component that relates how accurately a person estimates his or her body size; a subjective compenent that involves feelings, thoughts, and attitudes toward the body, and a behavioral component that refers to repetitive checking and the tendency to avoid situations where the person might feel uncomfortable about his or her body
bulimia nervosa
an eating disorder characterized by episodes of binge eating followed by fasting, self-induced vomiting, or the use of diuretics or laxatives.
dieting
a process of restrictive eating usauallt caused by body dissatisfaction, preoccupation with thinness, and the false belief that selfworth is dependent on body size. dieting creates a psychologicaly driven preoccupation with food and can have devastating results such as eating disorders or even suicide
disordered eating
eating behaviors resembling anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa but without the clinical diagnosis.
female athlete triad syndrome
the combination of three interrelated conditions associated with athletic training: disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis
muscle dysmorphia
a subcategory of body dysmorphic disorder. a disorder that straddles both anxiety and eating disorders, it is characterized by chronic preoccupation with body shape, which occurs in conjunction with changes in eating and exercise
osteoporosis
a skeletal disease in which bone mineral density is gradually diminished, making bones more vulnerable to compression and shear fractures
purging
a method of ridding the body of food through self-induced vomiting or laxatives
weight preoccupation
an excessive concern with one’s body weight
