All-or-None Principle
o is the principle that the strength by which a nerve or muscle fiber responds to a stimulus is independent of the strength of the stimulus
Size Principle of Recruitment
o states that under load, motor units are recruited from smallest to largest
Compartmentalization
o is a subconscious psychological defense mechanism used to avoid cognitive dissonance, or the mental discomfort and anxiety caused by a person’s having conflicting values, cognitions, emotions, beliefs, etc. within themselves
Stretch-Shorten Cycle
o Is an active stretch (eccentric contraction) of a muscle followed by an immediate shortening (concentric contraction) of that same muscle
Agonist
o Muscles directly involved in producing desired movement; can be either prime movers or synergists
Antagonist
o Muscles that oppose the action of the antagonist
