Chapter 2 Flashcards
Somatic System
Division of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) that controls voluntary motor behavior; carries motor commands from the central nervous system (CNS) to activate effector organs (ex. Muscles) in the PNS
Autonomic nervous system
Division of the PNS that regulates visceral and bodily processes at the subconscious level (involuntary system) including heart rate, ventilation, digestion, and other systems involving smooth muscle and glands
Interneurons
o Neurons that interconnect among other neurons; interneurons lie between motor and sensory neurons to link the sensory and motor divisions of the PNS
Executive function
o A set of cognitive processes that are necessary for the cognitive control of behavior
Multi-modal Sensory Input
o The convergence of incoming sensory signals into the CNS arriving from multiple sensory sources
Sensorimotor Integration
o A process involving the convergence and processing of sensory information and motor commands; may involve the use of motor commands and movements to enhance sensory information and the coupling and relationship between incoming sensory information and outgoing motor actions
Neuroplasticity
o is the ability of the brain to change throughout an individual’s life, e.g., brain activity associated with a given function can be transferred to a different location, the proportion of grey matter can change, and synapses may strengthen or weaken over time
