Chapter 3 Flashcards
Psychoactive substances
any drug that affects the brain.
inherent tolerance
people’s “inherent” tolerance of a drug.
acquired tolerance:
tolerance you get from using a lot
Narcotic
slows body functions, reduces pain
Stimulant
block reuptake of dopamine; enhances energy/mood
cross tolerance
tolerance of one drug produces tolerance to a drug with similar neural action
Depressant: increasing GABA function, decreases AcH function. Calming effects and decreased inhibition. Ex: alcohol, benzos
reverse tolerance
when your liver gets damaged after heavy drinking and you start to actually need LESS alcohol to get drunk (b/c your liver can’t metabolize it so it just enters your blood stream)
Hallucinogen
mimic serotonin and epinephrine; cause halllucinations and enhanced perception. Ex: LSD, marijuana
Crack
version of cocaine made with baking soda; cheaper.
Derivatives
a drug that is chemically similar to another drug in form/function
Meth
an amphetamine and stimulant that you can smoke
Synthetics
drugs that are made synthetically and mimic an illegal drug so you can legally consume it
physiology of alcohol: broken down by ADH in liver; increases GABA and decreases AcH. see above. Also decreases frontal cortex function and inner ear fluid density, resulting in dizziness
