Chapter 3 Flashcards
Stresses the linguistic aspect of speech production
Phonological approach
emphasizes the motor component of speech
Articulation
Disorders when no known pathology is causing the errors
Functional disorders
Result from known physical causes (cleft palate, hearing impairment)
Organic disorders
Reduced reactions to sensitivity
Hypo sensitivity
Overly strong reactions to sensation
Hypersensitivity
Nonspeech oral motor exercises
NSOMES
Assumption that the best route to target mastery is through intense practice on limited targets
Vertical training
Attacks goals broadly. Exposure to wide variety of targets will facilitate a clients phoneme production
Horizontal training
Combination of vertical and horizontal? Focus on a certain amount on targets for a specific time then moves to another
Cycles approach
Most significant speech problem associated with cleft palate. Inability to close off oral cavity from nasal cavity during speech
Velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI)
disruption in the mechanical transmission of sounds from the external auditory canal to the cochlea, middle hear
Conductive hearing loss
Deficit in transmission from sound through cochlea hair cells of auditory nerve, damage to inner ear
Sensorineural hearing loss
Speech motor planning disorder characterized by a reduced ability to willingly sequence movements of the articulators for speech in the absence of paralysis, incoordination, or weakness of the oral musculature.
Childhood apraxia of speech
Emphasize spoken language as the primary mode of communication
Oral programs for hearing impaired
