Disruption of circadian rhythm
Lead to poor or difficult to sleep, impact body temperature, pain sensitivity, mental alertness, physical strength, and the senses
Circadian Rhythms
With in each 24 hour period, the regular fluctuation from high to low points of certain bodily functions and behaviors
Stage one
Transition from waking to sleeping; irregular waves with occasional after waves
Stage III
Deeper sleep; slow wave sleep begins when EEG shows 20% of brain waves are delta waves
Stage two
Transition from light to deeper sleep; sleep spindles appear
Stage four
Deepest sleep; stage for sleep begins when 50% of waves are Delta waves
Parasomnias
Sleep disturbances in which behaviors and physiological states that normally take place only in the waking state occur while a person is sleeping
Dyssomnias
Sleep disorders and which timing, quantity, quality of sleep is impaired
Narcolepsy
An incurable sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and uncontrollable attacks of REM sleep
Insomnia
As a disorder characterized by difficulty falling or staying asleep, by waking too early, or by sleep that is light, restless, or of poor quality
Physical drug dependence
Results from the body’s natural ability to protect itself against harmful substances by developing a drug tolerance. Tolerance occurs because the brain adapts to the presence of the drug by responding less intensively to it. In addition, the liver produces more enzymes to break down the drug.
