Chapter 3 Flashcards
When do you need to check your car before driving?
Before every trip — think about the weather, your destination, and road conditions.
Where can you get help to know what to check in your car?
Your driver’s manual has tips and steps for checking your car.
What happens if you crash at just 40 km/h?
It’s like falling from 10 meters onto concrete!
The impact can be deadly.
What are the 3 keys to avoiding crashes?
Anticipate – Look ahead.
Observe – Watch your surroundings.
Adapt – Adjust speed & position.
What are the speed limits in the UAE?
140 km/h – Major roads
80 km/h – Inside cities
100 km/h – Outside built-up areas
How much road do you need to stop at 60 km/h vs. 120 km/h?
At 60 km/h, you need about 35 meters to stop.
At 120 km/h, you need around 110 meters!
The faster you go, the longer it takes to stop.
What happens to your vision when you drive fast?
Your vision narrows.
You only see what’s directly ahead, not the sides.
This is called tunnel vision.
How can you stop tunnel vision while driving?
Move your eyes and scan the road.
Look left, right, and far ahead regularly.
What should you do while turning through the bend?
Use the accelerator gently.
Let the engine work just enough to keep the car moving,
but do not speed up during the turns.
What happens if you speed up too early while turning?
Too much speed while turning can cause the wheels to lose grip and skid, especially on rear—wheel—drive cars.
Wait to straighten the steering wheel before increasing speed.
Can stress affect your vision while driving?
Yes!
Stress can cause or make tunnel vision worse, narrowing your focus and making it harder to see things around you.
Stay calm and alert to see clearly in all directions.
What should you do before entering a bend?
Take your foot off the gas
Use the brake gradually to slow down
If needed, shift to a lower gear
📌 Always slow down before the bend, not during!
Is it safe to brake during a bend?
No, avoid braking on a bend
It can make your car unstable
The sharper the bend, the riskier it is
✅ Always brake before turning
What is the Three-Second Rule?
It’s a simple way to check if you’re far enough behind the car in front while driving on a main road.
✅ Helps avoid rear-end accidents
✅ Keeps a safe following distance
How do you use the Three-Second Rule?
Pick a clear point on the road (like a tree or sign)
When the car in front passes it, count:
“one hundred and
one … one hundred and two
… one hundred and three.”
If you pass that point before reaching 3, you’re too close!
How long does it take to react when the car in front brakes?
It takes about 1 second to notice and react by pressing the brake.
That’s why keeping a safe distance is so important!
Does driving faster save a lot of time?
No, it doesn’t save much time.
Example: If you drive at 100 km/h instead of 80 km/h, you only save 1 minute over 10 km.
It adds stress and increases the risk of accidents.
What should you watch out for when overtaking a bus or truck?
Be ready for strong air turbulence — it can shake your car and affect your steering.
Hold the wheel firmly and stay calm.
Why should you not fully trust a vehicle’s indicator?
Drivers might forget to turn it off.
They might have turned it on by mistake.
Another hidden vehicle may be behind the car that wants to change lanes. It could have the same intention as you, which may lead to an accident, especially in traffic.
How to Overtake Safely
Check the road ahead
(Make sure it’s clear and safe)
Check your mirrors
(Center and side mirrors)
Check your blind spot
(Look over your shoulder)
Signal
(Turn on your indicator)
Double-check the road
(Make sure nothing has changed)
Start overtaking
Return to your lane
🔹 See the full car in your mirror? Safe to go back.
🔹 Still partly hidden? Stay in your lane a bit longer.
Who is responsible if a car crashes while making a left-hand turn and gets hit from behind?
The driver making the turn is responsible.
Even though most of these accidents happen when another car comes from behind, the law says the turning driver must make sure it’s safe before turning.
Why should your front wheels stay straight when stopping before a junction to turn left?
If your wheels are turned left and a car hits you from behind, you might get pushed into the opposite lane and cause a head-on crash.
👉 Keep your wheels straight and don’t cut the corner to stay safe.
What kind of vehicles are not allowed on a motorway?
Vehicles that can’t go faster than 60 km/h are not allowed on motorways.
What actions are prohibited on a motorway?
You must not:
Stop
Park
Reverse
Make a U-turn
Walk
Ride a bicycle
