Ethics
are guiding principles. these guiding moral principles are used to direct a massage therapist in proper course of action in ethical dilemmas.
Scope of Practice
is performing treatments and technique you are qualified to perform. Working outside of the scope of practice can lead to malpractice lawsuits.
Boundaries
are limitations that can be set by the massage therapist and the client. They can be verbally set, such as a client asking a massage therapist to avoid working on specific part of the body, or non-verbal, such as a client leaving an article of clothing on. Which means they probably don’t want to have that part of the body worked on. Best way to identify boundaries is communication.
Permeable Boundaries
are boundaries that allow conversation, information, and emotion.
Semi-Premeable Boundaries
allows the therapist to be open or distant with the client depending on the situation.
Impermeable Boundaries
Severely limit the exchange of information between the therapist and client. This is useful when the client is asking too much personal information about the therapist.
Confidentiality
is keeping the client information between the therapist and client private and protected.
Open-Ended Questions
is a question used when asking for feedback from the clients.
Closed-Ended Questions
is a question used when asking yes-or-no response only.
Self-Disclosure
is when the client shares information about themselves.
Active-Listening
is listening to what the client is saying, and actively interpreting the information being given.
Passive-Listening
is listening to a client without responding.
Body-Language
is a form of unspoken communication in which a person is able to communicate through conscious or subconscious gestures.
Transference
is when a client begins viewing the massage therapist similarly to a person in their own personal life.
Counter-Transference
is when the therapist begins viewing the client similarly to a person in their own personal life.
Denial
a common defense mechanism, is a refusal to acknowledge a given situation, or acting as if something didn’t happen.
Displacement
is often negative. Displacement is satisfying an impulse by substitution.
Projection
is placing one’s own internal feelings onto someone else.
Reggession
is taking a step back psychologically when faced with stress.
Repression
is subconsciously blocking out unwanted emotions. Not even knowing you have something to be upset about. The mind can erase certain memories to help protect a person from stress.
Therapeutic Relationship
The relationship a massage therapist shares with a client. Communication on both ends.
Power Differential
the client, while in control of the session in most aspects, gives the therapist the power to perform massage.
Dual Relationship
is a relationship between two people that consists of a professional aspect and a personal aspect.
Ethical Dilemma
is any situation a person finds themselves in which offers differing choices that conflict with a person’s ethics.
Duties
are often categorized as non-maleficence, or doing no harm.
Rights
refer to the client having the ability to make informed consent.
Sexual Misconduct
is any act that gives a sexual undertone or overtone that is inappropriate in a professional setting. Considered abuse of the power differential.
Kickback
is an illegal form of payment
Gradituity
is something a therapist may choose to accept or not accept. Always appreciated but not always accepted.
Barter
is simply trading one thing for another., with no money exchanging hands. Has to be equal amount exchanged.
Nepotism
if a business owner or a manager gives preferential treatment to a friend or family member in instances such as promotions or hiring over others who are more or equally qualified based on nothing other than their personal relationship, is known as nepotism.
Ethical Marketing
is essential in gaining a good reputation in the community and with potential customers and clients.
Tort
is a wrongfully act by one person that is responsible for an injury or harm to another person, and it’s considered a civil wrong that bears liability.
Slander
is a person intentionally using false statements verbally in order to discredit or harm the reputation of a person.
