Anatomy and Physiology Flashcards
Body Planes
Anatomy
is the study of the structure of the human body
Physiology
is the study of the function of the body
Homeostasis
is the existence and maintenance of a constant internal environment. the body’s internal environment is constantly changing and responding to various stimuli
Superior

Inferior

Anterior
front
Posterior
back
Proximal
closer to the midline
Distal
further from the midline
Medial
middle
Lateral
side
Deep
more internal
Superficial
towards the surface
Midsagittal
median plane, runs down the middle of the body, splitting the body into two equal left and right sides
Transverse
horizontal plane, splits the body into superior and inferior portions
Frontal
coronal plane, splits the body into anterior and posterior
Central body region
contain all of the structures located in the center of the body: the head, the neck, and the trunk
Trunk
can be further divided into three regions; the thorax, or chest, the abdomen, and the pelvis
Upper limb
can be broken into four regions; the arm, forearm, wrist, and hand
Lower limb
can be broken into four regions; the thigh, leg, ankle and foot
Dorsal body cavity
is created by the cranium and the vertebral column. Protect the brain and the spinal cord
Thoracic cavity
hold three more cavities inside of it, the pleural cavity, the mediastinum, and the pericardial cavity
