Chapter 3 Flashcards
Biology of the cell / Structures and Functions or Organelles
What are the 4 biomolecules?
- Nucleic Acids
- Carbohydrates
- Lipids
- Proteins
Nucleic Acids
Organic molecules that primarily provide instructions for building, maintaining, continuing and propagating.
*Monomer: Nucleotide
*Polymer: Nucleic Acid (DNA/RNA)
*Bonds: Hydrogen Bonds
Carbohydrates
Organic molecules that are composed of one or more simple sugars.
*Monomer: Monosaccharide
*Polymer: Polysaccharide
*Bonds: Glycosidic Bonds
Monosaccharides contain:
(one sugar molecule)
Glucose
Frucose
Glasctose
Disaccharides contains:
(two sugar molecules)
Sucrose
Lactose
Maltose
Polysaccharides contains:
(ten or more sugar molecules)
Starch
Glycogen
Cellulose
Lipids
Group of organic compounds whose primary fans are to insulate body organs, build cell membranes and provides stored energy
(Insoluble in water, but soluble in other liquids and organic solvents)
*Monomer: Fatty acid chains, glyccerol
*Polymer: Variable
*Bonds: Generic Covalent bonds
Proteins
Proteins are a class of nitrogenous organic compounds; basic structural material of the body.
*Monomer: Amino acids
*Polymer: Polypeptides
*Bonds: Peptide Bond
Enzymes
- Catabolic or anabolic
- Speed up rates of biochemical reactions
- Lowers the activation energy of biochem reactions
4.Remain unchanges after particpating in reactions
What do enzymes do?
They lower activation energy and speed up reaction
Enzymes will always end with?
-ase
Ex: Lactase
Name the Membrane bound organelles
- Endoplasmic Reticulum
- Golgi Apparatus
- Lysosomes
- Peroxisomes
- Mitochondria
Name the non-membrane organelles
- Ribosomes
- Centrosomes
- Proteasomes
- Cytoskeleton
What are the structures of cells external surface?
- Cilia
- Flahgella
- Microvilli
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Rough E.R
Used to make proteins (has ribosomes)
Smooth E.R
-Used to make lipids (fats)
-Detoxification of drugs and poisons
Golgi Apparatus
-Packs, modify and sort proteins
-Formation of vesicles
Lysosomes
-Contain digestive enzymes
-Formed by golgi
Peroxisomes
-Role in chemical digestion
-Used to break down molecules, fatty acids and amino acids w/ hydrogen peroxide
Mitochodria
Power house used to make ATP (energy)
Ribosomes
2 types & Makes proteins
Bound- Attached to external E.R (being released)
Free- Make proteins stay inside the cell
Centrosomes
Plays a huge role in cellular divison
Proteasomes
Protein digesting organelles
Cytoskeleton
Structural support and organization
-Cell division
-Movement
-Intracellular support
Cilia
Moves substances along cell surface
Flagella
Propels entore cell
Microvilli
Increases surface area and helps w/ digestion
