CHAPTER 3 Flashcards
Frequency Distributions and Ways of Presenting Data
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
Procedures for summarizing a group of scores from a sample to make them more understandable
Descriptive Statistics
An organized tabulation of the number of individuals located in each category on the scale of measurement
Frequency Distribution
An ordered listing of number of individuals
having each of the different values for particular variable
Frequency Tables
It measures the fraction of the total group that is associated with each score
Proportion
Proportion Formula
𝜌 = 𝑓/𝑛
An amount of something often expressed as a
number out of 100
Percentage
Percentage Formula
p(100) = f/n(100) %
Frequency table in which the number of individuals (frequency) is given for each interval of values
Grouped Frequency Table
Grouped Frequency Table where range of values in a grouped frequency table that are grouped together. ( For example if the interval size is 10, one of the intervals might be from 10 to 19
Interval
Barlike graph of a frequency distribution in which the values are plotted along the horizontal axis and the height of each bar is the frequency of that value: the bars are usually placed next to each other without spaces, giving the appearance of a city skyline
- Used in continuous data
HISTOGRAM
- Continuous line that represents the frequencies of scores within a class interval, based on a histogram; used for continuous data
Frequency Polygon
associated with time
scores or related to time
Line graph
A data visualization
where each category is represented by a rectangle, with the height of the rectangle being proportional to the values being plotted
* Categorical data
Column Chart
- Identical to column charts, but in this chart categories are organized vertically on the y axis and values are shown horizontally on the x axis
