Popular Sovereignty
the concept that goverment gets its authority from the people and that ultimate poltical power remains with the people
Limited Goverment
is the principle that the powers and functions of goverment are restricted by the US Constitution and other laws
Rule of Law
the concept that every member of soecity, including the ruler of goverment must obey the law and is never above it
Seperation of Powers
the duties of governing are divided among three branches, legislative, executive, and judicial
Checks and Balances
refers to the system that gives each branch of government power to change or cancel the acts of another branch
Veto
the executive power to reject legislation
Judcial Review
the power to determine whether the actions of the legislative and exeutive branches of goverment are constitutional
Unconstitutional
any law or Goverment action that is found to violate a part of the constitution
Federalism
under which the powers of the goverment are distrubted between the national goverment and the state goverment
Supremacy Clause
which declares that the Constitution together with US laws passed under the Constitiution and treaties made by the national goverment is the supreme law of the land
Supermajority
is a majority, such as three-fifths, two-thrids
Repeal
to cancel or revoke it by a legislative act
Executive Agreements
arragnements or compacts with foreign leaders of foreign governments even though this power is found nowhere in the Constitution’s text
Political Party
is an organized group that seeks to win elections in order to influence the activities of goverment
Cabinet
a group of advisors consisting of the heads of the executive departments
