Chapter 3 Flashcards
What is the Fullerton Advanced Balance Scale
is a test of both static and dynamic balance under varying sensory conditions.
designed to measure balance in higher-functioning active older adults.
uses ground clues to maintain upright balance while standing with a reduced base of support.
What is SFT
Senior fitness test
What does the senior fitness test (SFT) asses
a test that focuses on assessing strength, flexibility, agility and balance
What is the BERG balance scale
is a series of 14 balance measurement tests for older adults and helps assess if someone has a higher risk of falling.
Why might BMI not be the best test for health and wellness?
BMI calculation doesn’t work for very tall, very short, very muscular people
Weight is not a good indicator of fitness
Muscle is denser than fat and can skew BMI
What is systolic BP
The pressure in the arteries when the heart is contracting
Types of poor posture include
lordosis
kyphosis
sway back
One of the most common poor postures with older adults is
kyphosis
With head forward posture the tight muscles are
Levator scapula, sternocleidomastoid, neck extensors, superior trapezius
Gait testing should include (walking)
Does their pace look natural or impeded?
Observe their posture and how their arms move.
How far apart are their feet and knees? Does it look natural or pronounced?
Is the gait symmetrical or not?
The back scratch test (Apleys’s test) is meant to test for tightness of which muscles?
Pectoralis major and anterior deltoids
The Wall Wave test looks for tightness in the which muscles?
iliopsoas, lumbar erectors, pectoralis major and minor
and the neck extensors and upper trapezius
When doing a squat and knees cave inwards (Valgus knees). What muscles need to be strengthened?
Strengthen the gluteus medius and minimus
