Variations according to use, on the other hand, are called
REGISTERS
Registers are categorized into five varieties:
- VERY FORMAL
- FROMAL
- NEUTRAL
- FORML
- VERY INFORMAL
This register is “frozen” in time and content because it rarely or never changes. eg Lord’s prayer, laws, marriage vows, wills etc.
Very formal, frozen, static register
the formal and impersonal language, which is one-way in nature and used in formal situations. eg books, news reports, magazine, sermons etc
FORMAL OR REGULATED REGISTER
the normal style of speaking between communicators who use mutually accepted languaage that conforms to formal societal stndards. eg communication between stangers, teacher and student, doctor and patient etc
NEUTRAL, PROFESSIONAL, OR CONSULTIVE REGISTER
uses slangs, vulgarities, and colloquialism. eg conversations, chats, emails, blogs etc
INFORMAL, FROUP, OR CASUAL REGISTER
the private intimate language reserved for family members or intimate peple. eg between husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend etc
WERV INFORMAL, PERSONAL, OR INTIMATE REGISTER
