purpose of this phase is to perform a preliminary investigation to evaluate related IT business opportuntiy and problems
preliminary investigation is a critical step because the outcome will effect the entire development process
deliverable is the preliminary investigation report
Analysis
The purpose is to build a logical model of the new system
By creating requirement modeling to investigate business processes and document new system
Perform fact-finding techniques such as interviews and surveys.

Implementation
new system is constructed
Programs are written, tested and documented
system is installed
Deliverable is a completely functioning and documented information system
Systems Development Methodology
A standard process followed in an organization to conduct all the steps necessary to analyze, design, implement & maintain IS.
Systems Development Methodology Importance
To ensure consistency in management of projects
To ensure easier estimation of project times and costs
To eliminate those causes of unsuccessful system development – e.g. a more understandable process
Reduce time & cost
Interact & encourage user involvement
To improve the quality of work & system
Produce complete & accurate design specification and documentation
Meet user requirement
to ensure consistency in the management of project and easier estimate of the project time and cost
Waterfall Methodology problems
The main problem is the inflexible division of a project into separate stages.
Commitments made earlier on and it is difficult to react to changes in requirements
Unsuitable if requirements are not well understood or likely to change
