Chapter 3 Flashcards
polarity of water
water molecules are polar and hydrogen bond to other water molecules(up to 4).
cohesion
the manner in which water moves as a unit. its why water can move against gravity in plants
surface tension
the invisible “film” that water molecules have caused by cohesion
temperature moderation
water has a high specific heat.
density of ice
water is less dense as a solid than a liquid. this is why ice floats instead of sinks. hydrogen bonding keeps molecules spaced apart when water freezes
hydrophilic
likes water, polar molecules
hydrophobic
doesn’t like water, nonpolar molecules
dissociation of water
H2O <-> H+ + OH- (is very uncommon)
hydronium ion
H3O+
Hydroxide ion
OH-
acids
increase the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution. donate hydrogen ions to the solution (HCl<-> H+ +Cl-)
Bases
reduce hydrogen ion concentration of a solution. accept the hydrogen ion (NH3+ H+<-> NH4+)
pH
Quantified ion concentration of a solution. pH=-log [H+]. perfect range 6-8for biological processes
buffers
substance that minimize changes in pH
