Chapter 29: Neuromotor Conditions Flashcards
Adaptive Recreation
Can be divided into formal activities ( structured activities with rules and often a leader) and informal activities (child-initiated, unstructured activities)
Botulinum Toxin Therapy
“Botox”
- A more specific approach to reducing tone, with injections delivered directly to a spastic muscle.
- The injection of the toxin causes paralysis of the targeted muscle by blocking acetylcholine release, which is necessary for muscle activation and contraction
Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Top five most commonly used:
- Natural products
- Chiropractic
- Osteopathy
- Yoga
- Homeopathic Treatments.
Rigid Taping
Used to limit movement around a joint or to protect a joint during functional movement
Flexible, Elastic Kinesiology Tape
Used to facilitate improved movement patterns
Gaming Technology
The use of commercially available video game systems in the clinical environment in ways that are integrated with planned therapy.
Monoplegia
Involvement of one extremity.
Hemiplegia
Involvement of upper and lower extremities on one side of the body.
Paraplegia
Both lower extremities experience atypical tone
Quadriplegia
Refers to the involvement of all limbs
Tetraplegia
All limbs and the head/neck experience atypical tone
Physical Agent Modalities
- Various modalities target increasing muscle length and strength and reducing spasticity in children with CP to improve a child’s functioning in play, ADLs, IADLs, and academics.
- These intervention modalities include electrical stimulation and hot/cold therapy.
Functional Electrical Stimulation
- Can strengthen antagonist muscles, reeducate muscles, target pain reduction, improve coordination, increase range of motion, and reduce spasticity
- Most effective when used with a functional activity, such as combing hair when stimulating the biceps or releasing toys into a container while stimulating wrist extensors.
Motor Control
The ability to regulate movement is complex and emerges from the interaction of the child, the task, and the environment.
Rehabilitation Robotics
- Used to restore or improve function for a person with a disability.
- Can be part of a prosthetic, used as an assistive device for some functional task, or used therapeutically to achieve a high level of repetition of movement patterns.
