Cardiac tamponade
Compression of the heart die to fluid build up in the pericardial sac leading to decreased cardiac output
Commotis cordis
Blunt chest injury caused by sudden blow occurring during critical portion of person’s heartbeat
Flail chest
Three or more ribs fracture in two or more places resulting in the chest wall detaching from the rest of the thoracic cage
Hemopneumothorax
Blood and air in the pleural space
Hemothorax
Collection of blood in pleural space
Minute volume
Volume of air that moves in and out of the lungs per minute.
Calculated by multiplying the tidal volume and respiratory rate; also called minute ventilation
Parietal pleura
Thin membrane that lines the chest cavity
Visceral pleura
Thin membrane that covers the lungs
Ataxic respiration’s
Irregular ineffective respiration’s that may or may not have an identifiable pattern
DCAP BTLS
Deformities Contusions Abrasions Punctures Burns Tenderness Lacerations Swelling
Decorticate posturing
Stiff Bent arms Wrists twisted out Clenched fists Legs held straight
Sign of severe brain damage
Decerebrate posture
Arms and legs held straight
Toes pointed downward
Head and neck arched
Muscles tight and rigid
