Chapter 29 Flashcards
What are the components of hemoglobin?
2 alpha subunits plus 2 beta subunits. EACH subunit has an Fe2+ - Heme group plus a globin group.
Why is the hemoglobin (Hb) - O2 curve sigmoidal?
Because of cooperative binding among the four subunits of hemoglobin
What are 3 characteristics of metabolically active tissues?
- Increase in [H+]
- Increase in pCO2
- Increase in temperature
What does 2,3 bisphosphoglycerate do?
Reduces the affinity of adult hemoglobin for oxygen, but does not affect the affinity of fetal hemoglobin.
How does the blood carry CO2, a gas?
In the form of HCO3-
What are the 3 variables responsible for CO2 transport in the blood?
- Carbonic Anhydrase (CA)
- The Cl/HCO3 exchanger
- Hemoglobin
High pO2 in the lungs causes what to happen to CO2?
High pO2 causes the blood to dump (get rid of) CO2.
