Chapter 28 Flashcards
What is a protist?
Any eukaryote that is not a plant, animal, or fungus. Mostly unicellular, though some are colonial or multicellular.
How did complex organelles like the mitochondrion and chloroplast evolve (also look at 25.3)?
Endosymbiosis: they were engulfed by a cell and became organelles
What is the evidence for the endosymbiosis theory?
DNA analysis
What is secondary endosymbiosis?
A process in eukaryotic evolution in which a heterotrophic eukaryotic cell engulfed a photosynthetic eukaryotic cell, which survived in a symbiotic relationship inside the heterotrophic cell.
Give some examples of symbiotic protists.
Protists in termite guts that help break down food. Protists in P. Bursaria that provide the cell with nutrients.
Give some examples of disease causing protists.
Malaria protozoans (plasmodium)
What is the role of protists in aquatic communities?
They play an important role in the ecosystem because they are food for many marine animals
What is a producer?
An organism that produces organic compounds from CO2 by harnessing light energy or by oxidizing inorganic chemicals.
There used to be a kingdom Protista; why does it no longer exist?
They share a common ancestor with plants, animals, and fungi
