What is economic abuse?
controlling a person’s access to economic resources
what is the most common form of abuse?
neglect
what are characteristics of abusive parents?
history of abuse, neglect, emotional deprivation as a child. Family authoritarianism. low self-esteem. Poor coping skills. Social isolation. Unrealistic expectations of child’s behavior. harsh punishment frequently used. violent temper outbursts.
What are the 3 stages in the cycle of violence?
- tension-building stage
- acute-battering stage
- honeymoon stage
Tension-Building Stage
relatively minor incidents such as pushing, shoving, and verbal abuse.
Acute-Battering Stage
abuser releases built up tension by brutal beating which can result in serious injury
Honeymoon Stage
kindness and loving behaviors. abuser may give gifts
Who are the groups of vulnerable persons?
women (particularly those pregnant). children (especially if under 3 years of age). older adults. anyone in a crisis situation.
symptoms of abuse can be vague such as…
chronic pain, insomnia, hyperventilation, or gynecological problems
What are things you SHOULD DO in the interview?
conduct in private. be direct, honest, professional. use language patient understands. ask patient to clarify words not understood. be understanding and attentive. inform patient you must make referral to CPS or APS and explain the process. assess safety and reduce danger (at discharge).
How can you help reduce danger after discharge?
say “I’m concerned that you will be hurt again if you go home. What options do you have?”. Help patient formulate a SAFETY PLAN for escape if abuse should happen again.
Shaken baby syndrome
leading cause of death as a result of physical abuse; usually occurs in children under 2 years old.
Primary Prevention of Abuse
measures taken to prevent the occurrence of abuse
Secondary Prevention of Abuse
early intervention in abusive situations to minimize their disabling or long-term effects
Tertiary Prevention of Abuse
often occurs in mental health settings; nurses facilitate the healing and rehabilitation process by counseling individuals and families, providing support groups for survivors, and assisting survivors to achieve optimal level of safety, health, and well being.
