Chapter 28 Flashcards
Pathogen
infectious agent that is present in a host
colonization
microorganism multiplies but does not cause infection
infectious disease
not at risk for transmission to someone else
Communicable disease
Disease from person to person
- HEP C
Symptamotic
Clinical signs and symptoms of a disease
Asymptomatic
No clinical signs in symptoms
-HEP C
Chain of infection
- infectious agent
- reservoir
- portal of exit
- mode of transmission
- portal of entry
- host
Infectious agent
-Potential cause depends on:
+ # of organisms (dose
+ Virulence ( ability to survive in host or outside the body)
+Ability to enter and survive in the host
+Susceptibility of the host (immune system)
Reservoir
- Place where pathogen can survive
- carrier
- require proper: food, oxygen, water, Low temp, PH (5-7) , light
Portal of exit
skin/mucous membranes, respiratory tract, urinary tract, GI tract, Reproductive tract, blood
Mode of transmission
- each disease has a specific mode
- major route=unwashed hands
- portal of entry can be the same as portal of exit
course of infection by stage
- incubation period
- prodormal stage
- illness stage
- convalescence
Incubation period
Interval between entrance of pathogen into body and appearance of first symptoms
Prodormal stage
Interval from onset of nonspecific signs and symptoms to more specific symptoms
illness stage
interval when client manifests signs and symptoms to specific type of infection
