Chapter 28 Flashcards
Interval between entrance of pathogen into body and appearance of first symptoms. Chickenpox 10-21 days. Common cold 1-2 days. Influenza 1-5 days mumps 12-26 days
Incubation period
Interval when acute symptoms of infection disappear
Convalescence
Interval from onset of nonspecific signs and symptoms ( low grade fever, fatigue) ex herpes simplex begins with itching and tingling before site before lesion appears
Proximal stage
Interval when patient manifest signs and symptoms specific to type of infection. Ex strep throat- strep pain
Illness stage
Is the invasion of a susceptible host by pathogens or microorganisms, resulting in disease.
Infection
Is the presence and growth of microorganisms within a host without tissue invasion or damage
Colonization
Infection can be transmitted directly from one person to another
Communicable disease
Ability to produce disease
Virulence
Is a place where microorganisms survive or multiply and await to a susceptible host
Reservoir
A process that eliminates many or all microorganisms with the exception of bacterial spores from inanimate objects
Disinfection
The complete elimination or destruction of all microorganisms, including sores
Sterilization
Absence of pathogenic disease
Asepsis
Includes procedure for reducing the number of organisms present or preventing the runs fear of organisms
Medical asepsis or clean technique
Prevents contamination of an open wound, serves to isolate the operative area from the unsterile environment
Surgical asepsis or sterile technique
