Chapter 28 Flashcards
A climate that is strongly affected by an ocean.
Maritime Climate.
A climate that is not directly affected by an ocean.
Continental climate.
A breeze that blows from over the water toward land in the afternoon.
Sea Breeze
A narrow band of fast moving high-altitude air.
Jet stream
The apparent deflection of an object due to the earths rotation.
Coriolis effect
A large volume of air with uniform moisture and tempiture.
Air mass.
Air masses interact
Weather fronts
What is climate?
The long-term avarage of weather conditions.
What is weather?
Day to day outside condition.
What are the five sphere for earths systems?
Atmospher, Cryosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere.
What is the atmosphere?
The air around us.
What is the Biosphere?
Everything organic.
What is the Hydrosphere?
Liquid
What is the cryosphere?
Frozen water, snow, ice, glaciers.
What is the lithosphere?
Earths outermost layer.
What is the primary factor that influences climate at a given location?
latitude.
Where is the solar radiation most intense on earth?
At the Equator.
At what degrees do the sun rays hit earths surface at the tropic zone?
90 degrees.
At what degrees do the suns rays hit earths surface at the temprate zone?
50 degrees.
At what degrees do the sun rays hit earths surface at the polar zones?
30 degrees.
What zone are we located in?
Temperate zone.
What other factors determine climate?
Precipitation, Mountains, and Water.
What is the windward side like on a mountain range?
Cool and wet, a lot of vegitation.
What is the leeward side of a mountain like?
Warm and dry air, little to no vegitation.
Which climate zone and what type of vegitation does Colorado have?
War semi-arid, and grassland
Increase in the average temperatures of earths near-surface air and oceans.
Global warming.
The warming of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of western south america that every 3-10 years.
El Nino
The opposite of El Nino, occurs when trade winds in the pacific are usually strong and surface water is colder.
La Nina.
What are two things that effect gravitational forces?
mass and distance.
What diameiter of the earth is longer?
Equator.
What is the distance between the two diameters?
42 killomiters
26 miles
What does a magnetic feild do for earth?
Protects us from harmful radiation from the sun.
what magnetic pole is in the northern hemmesphere?
South magnetic pole.
Can the magnetic poles flip?
Yes they can, they can happen up to every 200 years but its been 700 years sense the last flip.
What is the flipping of the magnetic poles called?
Magnetic reversal.
What is a magnetic sphere?
deflects harmful radiation from the sun.
How are the aruoras created?
When electrically charged particals collide with attoms in the atmosphere.
What is the scientific name of the northern lights?
Aurora borealis.
What is the scientic name of the southern lights?
Aurora austalis.
What hemisphere are the aurora borealis in?
Northern.
What hemisphere is the auror austalis in?
Southern.
When is earth closest to the sun?
Early January. 147 million killomiters away.
When is earth farthest from the sun?
Early July. 152 million killomiters away.
