Chapter 26: Upper Respiratory Problems Flashcards
Allergic Rhinitis
Inflammation of the nasal mucosa, often in response to a specific allergen
Decannulation
Removal of the tracheostomy from the trachea
Deviated Septum
Deflection of the normally straight septum
Epitaxis
Nosebleed
Laryngectomy
Removal of part or all of the larynx
Laryngitis
Inflammation of the voice box (larynx)
Nasal Polyps
Soft, painless, benign growths that form slowly in response to repeated inflammation of the sinus or nasal mucosa
Pharyngitis
Acute inflammation of the pharyngeal walls
Rhinoplasty
Surgical reconstruction of the nose, normally done to improve airway function or for cosmetic purposes
Sinusitis
Occurs when inflammation or swelling of the mucosa blocks the openings in the sinuses through which mucus drains into the nose
Surgical Cricothyroidotomy
Procedure that involves making an incision through the skin and cricoid membrane in the anterior surface of the neck.
Tracheostomy
Surgically created stoma (opening) in the anterior part of the trachea. May be done to establish a patent airway, bypass upper airway obstruction, facilitates removal of secretions, permit long-mechanical ventilation, and assist with weaning from mechanical ventilation.
