Chapter 2.6 ~ Genetic Inheritance Flashcards
Phenotype
Phenotypes are our physical genetics that can be seen, determined by our genotypes and our environment
Dominant
A trait that only needs one allele to become present in someone, masking the recessive allele that may be present
Recessive
Recessive refers to a trait that will be passed down through generations that will be masked by a dominant trait
Homozygous
Homozygous means a characteristic that has the same two allele genotypes ~ AA
Heterozygous
Heterozygous means a characteristic that has two different allele genotypes ~ Aa
Alleles
Alleles are the forms of a gene in a characteristic
Complete Dominace
When a dominant gene causes the recessive gene to be masked
~ B + b = Bb
Incomplete Dominance
When two dominant traits combine causing the mixture of the two genes
~ Red + White = Pink
Co-Dominance
When the two dominant genes mix resulting in two outcomes
~ Black + White = Black-White
Partial Dominance
When the offspring of an animal presents a phenotype that is different from one/ both of its parents
~ co-dominance and complete dominance

Genotype
The ‘instructions’ in our DNA used to create our phenotype ~ the letters used to determine genetics -Bb-
