Chapter 2.1 ~ Genetics Flashcards
Chromosones
Chromosomes are thread like structures that are found inside the nucleus of cells and contain the DNA containing genetic information. Chromosomes can only be seen during cell division.
Sex Cells
A cell that can be used to reproduce offspring of that animal
Somatic Cell
A somatic cell is a normal cell that everyone has in their body, used to make up ourselves. Basically all the cells except sex cells in our body.
Autosomes
Autosomes are non-sex chromosomes. These chromosomes are found in somatic cells adding up to a total of 44 in each cell ~ 22 pairs.
Sex Chromosome
Sex chromosomes are the 2 out of the 46 chromosomes found in everyones cells that determine the gender of an individual. XX means female and XY means male.
Karyotypes
A karyotype is the sorted set of chromosomes in somatic cells, paired based on size and shape.
Genes
Genes are segments of DNA ~Deoxyribonucleic Acid~ molecules with coded instructions to create a specific protein determining the characteristics of an organism
