Chapter 25 (Exam 4) Flashcards
Explain the glycogen structure.
Branched polymer of alpha (1 –> 4) - linked glucose with alpha (1 –>6) linkages every 12 to 14 glucose units
How are branches at every 10th residue created in glycogen?
Alpha 1,6 glycosidic bonds
Where does glycogen storage mainly occur?
Liver and muscle
What is glycogen degraded to and why?
Glucose units for use in energy production
What can glycogen be made from?
Excess blood glucose or recycling of glucogenic metabolites like lactate or certain amino acids`
Where can the enzymes work on a glycogen molecule?
The nonreducing ends
What does a glucose molecule need to do before it can be synthesized?
Needs to be activated, because glucose-1-phosphate is not reactive enough to be attached to the growing glycogen chain.
