Compassion fatigue
Compassion fatigue is the emotional pain or cost of working with
traumatized persons that may result in a stress response for a nurse.
goal of hospice care
The goal of hospice care is to use an interdisciplinary team to deliver
compassionate, holistic, and medically managed end-of-life services.
Mourning
Placing flowers at the accident site where a toddler died is an example of
mourning. Mourning refers to outward expressions of grief, including
cultural practices and rituals marking the anniversary of a death.
Chronic grief
Chronic grief occurs when grief does not diminish over time; it does not describe an inability to publicly acknowledge the grief.
Masked grief
Masked grief occurs when grief behaviors of the survivor interfere with normal functioning, but the person is not aware that the behaviors are concealing the grieving process
Exaggerated grief
Exaggerated grief occurs when the survivor is overwhelmed by grief and cannot function
Disenfranchised grief
Disenfranchised grief occurs after a loss that cannot be openly acknowledged or publicly shared by the grieving person.
Tangible
Loss of a person, pet, or possession
Intangible
Loss of health or a relationship
Disorganization and despair
Disorganization and despair marks the beginning of apathy, withdrawal, and anguish
Reorganization
Reorganization begins a new state of normal and is marked by decreased intensity of the negative emotions related to the loss, and a sense of enjoyment of life begins to return.
Shock and numbness
Shock and numbness occur immediately after the loss when the bereaved feels numb
Searching and yearning
Searching and yearning describes the time when the person yearns for the deceased and is marked by anger, fear, anxiety, and confusion
