Chapter 25 & 26: Wound Closure & Healing Flashcards
List the desirable characteristics for surgical needles and explain why these characteristics are important.
Strong and does not break easily, rigid yet flexible enough to bend without breaking. Points must be sharp to penetrate tissue with minimal resistance. Must be same diameter as suture material
How you would place the needle in the needle holder?
clamp the body of the needle 1/4 to 1/2 distance of the eye to the point, place needle securely in the jaw tip, close needle holder to first or second ratchet
Describe the process of passing the needle holder to the surgeon
Lay it on the designated zone near the working area, often contains a magnetic pad
Discuss instances when absorbable or nonabsorbale sutures would be utilized and provide rationale for their use
Absorbable = slow healing tissues, extended wound support, absorption is desired
Non absorbable = rapid healing, good support during early ambulation
Why is collagen production so important in wound healing?
It is the basic protein substance of connective tissue. It contributes to the tensile strength of the wound
Provide actions that the perioperative RN can perform during the intraoperative phase to assist with wound healing
Prevent foreign bodies in wound, prevent breaks in aseptic technique, provide appropriate wound dressings, prevent skin breakdown by using appropriate padding
