Chapter 2.5 Flashcards
What are the three protective features of the brain?
skull and backbone
meninges
ventricular system
What is the function of the spinal column?
bony structure that surrounds and protects the spinal cord
What is the first line of defense for the brain?
bone aka the skull
What are the meninges?
coverings or layers of tissue that surround the brain (in between the skull and brain)
What are the parts of the meninges?
Dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater, and the subarachnoid
What is the dura mater?
layer under the skull that is tough and above the arachnoid
What is a big function of the arachnoid mater?
large blood and nutrient supply for the brain
What is the pia mater?
thin delicate tissue layer that hugs the convoluted surface of the brain
What is the subarachnoid layer?
layer below the arachnoid mater that has CSF that provides the brain with buoyancy in case of a hit
Where is the csf located?
in the subarachnoid space, ventricles, and around the spinal cord
How many ventricles are there in the brain?
