Chapter 24: Spinal Cord Injuries Flashcards
Autonomic dysreflexia (hyperreflexia)
Involves exaggerated responses of the autonomic nervous system (ANS)
Catheterization
A procedure to enable the flow of urine by way of insertion of a latex tube into the bladder by way of the urethra when there is no voluntary control of the bowel.
Cauda equina
The spinal nerves that continue beyond the exit the spinal cord, resembles a ‘horses tail’
Credes’ maneuver
The application of external pressure on the abdomen with their fists, starting at the umbilicus and pressing downward to urinate
Decubitus ulcers
damage to the skin as a result of pressure
Deep vein thrombosis
swelling in the lower extremities, localized redness, and a low grade fever
Heterotopic ossification
The abnormal formation of bone deposits on muscles, joints, and tendons
Peristalsis
A process of muscle contractions resulting in the movement of food through the digestive track and a relaxation of the rectal sphincters
Reflex arc
When a stimulus causes afferent impulses to enter the cord, synapse, and exit causing a contraction of the muscle fibers
Spina bifida
A congenital neural tube dysfunction resulting in an incomplete closing of the vertebral column and spinal cord agenesis. May yield same symptoms as traumatic SCI.
Spinal shock
A period of altered reflex activity immediately after a traumatic SCI.
