Chapter 22 : Progressive Neurodegenerative Disorders Flashcards
plaques
scar tissue formation that reduces the axons’ ability to conduct impulses
benign
person experiences one or two episodes of neurological deficits with no residual impairments
relapsing-remitting nonprogressive
the person returns to the previous level of function after each exacerbation with no residual deficits
relapsing-remitting progressive
a person has some residual impairment with each remission unpredictable with varied patterns of exacerbation and remission
primary progressive
a steady decline in function without remissions and exacerbations
dopamine
a neurotransmitter, a decrease causes deficits in the speed and quality of motor movements, postural stability, cognitive skill and effective expression
Lewy body pathology
a process in which proteins abnormally fold and form intracellular inclusions within the cell body and neurons
tremor dominant PD
an absence of other motor symptoms and tremors
nontremor-dominant PD
akinetic-rigid syndrome and postural instability gait disorder
preclinical period
when neurons have begun to degenerate but no symptoms are yet evident
prodromal period
can last months or even years, generalized symptoms such as depression, anxiety, constipation, REM, behavior disorder and fatigue
symptomatic period
wen class motor PD symptoms are evident followed by progressive nonmotor symptoms
