Chapter 24 - Lymphatic System Flashcards
functions of the lymphatic system
transport excess fluid bat to blood stream
transport dietary lipids
immune function
lymph
excess interstitial fluid and solutes
lymphatic capillaries
- endothelium
- cells overlap; form 1-way flaps
lymphatic vessels
- resemble veins
- some connect to lymph nodes
- afferent lymph vessels bring lymph to lymph node
- lymph exits lymph node via efferent lymph vessel
lymph ducts
-drain from trunks; empty into venous circulation
right lymphatic duct
- receives from rights side of head, neck, right upper limb, right thorax
- empties into junction of R subclavian vein and R internal jugular vein
thoracic duct
- largest
- cisternae chyli: receives from intestinal and lumbar trunks
macrophages
- get rid of stuff eating
- monocytes; phagocytize
dendritic cells
in lymph nodes; internalize antigens
what are the 3 types of lymphocytes
T-lymphocytes
B-lymphocytes
natural killer cells
natural killer cells
kill variety of infected cells
they are not specific (wipe out everything)
what do helper T-lymphocytes do
oversee immune response and secrete cytokines
cytotoxic T-lymphocytes
- activated by helper T
- directly kill foreign cells
lymphatic trunks
-formed from merging lymph vessels
5 types of lymphatic trunks
- R and L jugular
- R and L subclavian
- R and L bronchomediastinal
- intestinal
- R and L lumbar
