Chapter 24 -4 Flashcards
What is xylem’s function?
water transport from the roots to the leaves
What is the phloem’s function?
photosynthesized sugar transport from the leaves to other parts of the plant
What are the characteristics of primary plant growth?
lengthwise
occurs at tips of roots and tips of stems
apical meristem & root meristem cells contribute
What are the characteristics of the secondary plant growth?
diameter-wise
woody perrenials
cambium responsible for growth
Where is the vascular cambium located?
between xylem and phloem tissues
Where is the cork cambium located?
between bark and the cortex (photosynthesizing) tissue
What make up the external leaf structure?
blade - leaf body
veins - transport vessels
petiob - attaches blade to stem
What kind of tissue does external leaf have?
epidermis: outer surface
secretes protective chitin
houses stromata pores w/ guard cells for gas exchange
What are the parts of internal leaf tissues?
Ground tissues patisade mesophyll cells spongy " " vascular tissues xylem phloem
What is the difference b/w ground & vascular tissues?
2 layers of photosynthesizing cells
plants found in veins
What is the difference b/w patisade mesophyll cells and spongy?
tightly packed cells on top of leaf
looser packed cells on bottom of leaf
