What is a nutritional supplement?
a flavored drink that is used to supply extra calories or protein often served with meals or as a snack between meals. NEVER as a meal replacement
If resident has avoided a certain food group on their plate what do you do?
Talk to them and find out why they didn’t eat the food. it could have been too cold or too salty we can fix that to ensure residents are enjoying their for so they stay eating
what food group has the most calcium?`
dirt products, veggies, seafood, meat and grains
Where can we find glucose and what does it do?
glucose can be found in carbohydrates and they are they body fuel
What is a plate guard?
assistive device to help someone with use of only one hand to feed themselves
When feeding patient with dementia what should the nursing assistant do?
offer small bites of food slowly
enteral feeding (tube feeds)
allows a person to get nutrients without the need to swallow or chew
how many ounces of liquids should a healthy adult consume every day and why?
48-96 ounces and to keep up with the fluids that normally leave our bodies
When a resident is NPO what can the nursing assistant do to make them more comfortable?
Frequent oral care
What to report to the nurse regarding ENTERAL FEEDING
Diarrhea
How to document amount of food a resident eats
% of total meal that was eaten (mrs jones at 80% of her meal)
OR record the % of each food that was eaten (100% of mashed potatoes, 50% of her salad)
