Often (1-2 hours) because they’re mouths get dry due to not drinking liquids and mouth can remain open
How should dentures be stored?
In lukewarm water

Drape the persons body with a bath blanket

20 minutes
What should the temperature of the water be for peri care?
110-115 degrees
Providing oral care on an unconscious person
- Turn person on side so fluids run out of the mouth and not back toward the throat (prevents aspiration and choking)
- Never place your fingers in the persons mouth (an unconscious person may bite down involuntary/without warning)
- Explain what you are doing throughout the procedure, even though the person may not seem to be able to hear you or respond (the person may be aware of some level, say it to make them feel safe)
- Apply lip lubricant to the persons lips as needed (to prevent drying or cracking of the lips, it can lead to infection)
What direction do you go when cleaning the peri area?
Top to bottom (we don’t want to cause infection from bacteria coming from the anus)
What times do residents bathe?
Whenever they want to!!!
schedules for the AM and PM but at the end its up to the resident when we bathe them
What is “Tell the nurse” about discharge?
Discharge is NOT a normal process of aging and needs to be reported to the nurse, they could have an infection
