Chapter 2.3 Flashcards

1
Q

voice source vs. filter

A

The voice source is the vibration of the vocal folds, whereas the vocal tract is a filter that changes the sound produced by the voice source
- the sound produced by the voice source and the sound that results after being filtered by the vocal tract will be composed of the same harmonics, but the relative amplitudes of each harmonic will be different

Q

How does the vocal tract function as a filter?

A

The vocal tract filters the sound produced by the voice source (the glottis). Its shape amplifies certain frequencies (harmonics) of the voice source, thereby making it so that each vowel has a specific set of formants (resonant frequencies).
—Components of the voice source that don’t have frequencies near a resonance of the vocal tract are dampened.
