What are rules?
regulations or guidelines imposed upon the members of a specific group imposed upon the members of a specific group so they can work together in a peaceful manner.
What are laws?
formal rules that are designed to govern how people behave so we can all live together in one peaceful and united society
3 reasons why we have laws are:
-Protection
-Punishment
-Safety
What is a Sanction?
sanction a penalty imposed on a person who has breached a criminal law. (e.g fine or imprisonment)
What is a Statute?
law made by parliament (also called legislation or Acts of Parliament).
Eg. Campaigns, petitions by the public, parliamentary inquiries can inspire the idea of a statute being made
What is Common Law?
Judge made law, unwritten laws that are based on legal precedents made by the courts, for judges to follow in similar situations or future cases in that area
What is Statutory authority?
A body or organisation that is established by parliament to make laws on its behalf
What is Parliament?
An organisation that makes the laws in a country, often with a lower house to draft laws and an upper house to review the proposed law.
What is a Judge?
an impartial adjudicator who ensures proper processes and upholds justice in the court. They determine outcome of trials when theres no jury.
What is a legal system?
Encompasses a range of courts and tribunals, laws, parliaments, police and prisons, designed to help protect the rights of all citizens.
What is a Legal Principle?
A legal rule of law established by a judge that must be followed by judges in other courts when determining similar cases
What is Rule of Law?
The idea that everyone is equal before the law regardless of their power or status in society.
