Chapter 22 - The Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Endocardium
A membrane lining the heart’s interior wall.
Myocardium
Thick, strong muscles making up the middle layer.
Epicardium
The thin outer layer of the cardiac wall.
Fibrous Pericardium
The outermost layer anchors the heart.
What is the function of the pericardial cavity?
Acts as a lubricant and reduces friction between layers of the heart.
What is function of the fibrous pericardium?
Anchors the heart in the mediastinum and prevents overfilling.
What is the function of the cardiac valves?
Allow blood to flow in one direction only.
What is the function of the capillaries in the circulation system?
Exchange nutrients and waste.
Why does the heart muscle need its own blood supply?
To provide oxygen and nourishment to the heart tissue.
How does oxygenated blood enter systemic circulation?
During ventricular contraction, the blood exists in systemic circulation through the aorta.
