Chapter 22: Lymphatic System Flashcards
Lymphatic vessels function
they drain into the venous circulation, where lymphocytes and other immune cells can enter the bloodstream
2 main ducts of the lymphatic system
thoracic duct and right lymphatic duct
Lymphatic circulation
lymph flow into the lymphatic system and return to the circulatory system
Immune cells
B cells, T cells, NK cells, neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils
4 types of T cells
-Cytotoxic T cells
-Memory T cells
-Helper T cells
-Suppressor T cells
Cytotoxic T cells
attack foreign cells or body cells infected by viruses
Memory T cells
a subset of T cells that respond to a previously encountered antigen
Helper T cells
stimulate the activation and function of both T and B cells
Suppressor T cells
blocks the actions of some other types of lymphocytes, to keep the immune system from becoming over-active.
2 Types of B cells
plasma and memory B cells
Plasma cells
produce and secrete antibodies
Memory B cells
stored until re-exposure
Natural Killer Cells (NK Cells)
large lymphocytes responsible for immunological surveillance for the innate immune system
-attack foreign cells, virus-infected cells, and cancer cells
Neutrophils
attack and remove pathogens; first line of defense
Eosinophils
attack and remove pathogens; first line of defense
